Beauties for a cause...

Miss Earth Australia is Australia’s only national beauty pageant that is designed to promote young women and environmental issues. It is part of an international movement with organizations in 100 countries. The winner of Miss Earth Australia 2007 will travel to the international pageant for three weeks to compete for the international crown. This pageant is watched by an international television audience of 70 million people.

Contestants are assessed by our judges on the following criteria: knowledge of environmental issues, the ability to speak publicly on them, appearance and a talent (such as singing a song, reciting a poem, dancing). If you want to be a contestant and you do not have much knowledge of the environment then we suggest that you read the environmental articles in newspapers and that you google phrases such as ‘global warming’, ‘climate change’ and ‘saving energy’. You will have to show that you have planted trees and that you have persuaded others to do so (such as family, friends or workmates). In addition, you must have a good idea about the ways in which households can save energy and water and thereby reduce their environmental footprint.

The prizes are: Miss Earth Australia 2007; Miss Earth Australia 2007 Fire; Miss Earth Australia 2007 Water; Miss Earth Australia 2007 Air; Miss Photogenic (this selection is made by a panel of photographers); Best in Evening Gown; Best in Swimsuit; Miss Friendship (the winner is chosen by the candidates), and Best Environmental Speech.

It is imperative that our contestants encourage those around them to take note of what is happening to our environment and to do something about reducing their environmental footprint.

This year we want our candidates to encourage their family, friends and workplaces to plant trees. We don’t care where this happen but it is essential that candidates achieve this goal. As you know trees help to clean the atmosphere by extracting carbon dioxide from it and turning it into wood and they are objects of beauty.

Planting trees is a pain free operation as is changing incandescent light bulbs and replacing them with low energy fluorescent light bulbs and voluntarily reducing water consumption.

Join in, do some good, and have some fun. The successful contestants will come to Sydney for one week prior to the Pageant. There they will receive training in choreography and learn how to present themselves well on stage. The pageant is a theatrical show which will be most enjoyable for the contestants and the audience.
